Bog birch grows in boggy areas on spongy soil that is composed of decomposing plant remains. The peat can be fairly acidic (such as on sphagnum moss) to neutral (on the black, mucky remains of sedges). It can be encouraged to grow on moist sand. It is a bushy shrub with attractive small leaves.
